About the event

To celebrate Science and Technology after Earth Day, Cinema Learning Challenge and Whitaker Center for Science and the Arts will be taking a close look at groundwater, the water that flows under our feet. We will make a model of what happens underground when it rains and use the Engineering Design Cycle to create a well with a pump to simulate the removal of the water from the ground. After the hands-on program, you will view the documentary, Expedition Chesapeake: a Journey of Discovery and see how groundwater plays a part in the health of estuaries around the globe and in our own backyard.

The Hands-On KIT for Water Under Our Feet will be provided free of charge for all students signing up. The Kit will be picked up at the Las Vegas Natural History Museum (900 Las Vegas Blvd, No.) starting April 14 to April 26 during their regular operating hours (9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.). Limited supplies at a first-come, first-served basis. Bring your registration confirmation with you. The Zoom link for the hands-on-program will be provided by email one day prior to the the event. Appropriate for ages fifth grade through high school.

In addition to the KIT, you need to collect these supplies in advance of joining us in Zoom:

  • Pitcher/ container of water
  •  A measuring cup

We’ll be using the Engineering Design Cycle to improve our pump. You can use any item available at your home or school. You might want recycled items, scissors, tape, craft materials, etc. Use your imagination to use your resources in creative ways!
